Day 150: 9/6/16 (Virtual AT 2020 Day 157)

We had a pretty realaxing zero day in Monson, ME today. I know we said we didn’t plan on taking any more zeros on this trip, but we earned one.

We were awake by 7am, but only because we wanted to partake in the famous Shaws breakfast. It was one of the best hostel breakfasts we’ve had. For $9 we got two eggs, bacon, the best home fries, and all the blueberry pancakes we could eat. We also had all the coffee and orange juice we wanted. It’s served communally, which really adds too the homey feel of the place.

After breakfast we just headed back out to the tent and dozed for a few hours until the sun made it too hot to be in the tent anymore. It was really nice. We finally packed up our stuff and headed up the street to the Lakeshore House, where we’ve got a room for the night. We were greeted warmly and allowed to settle into our room before lunch. We also got our final resupply boxes, which were sent here by our friend Michelle last week.

We did a bit of waking around, back over to the gas station for more snacks and candy to supplement the resupply, then grabbed a few other things at Pete’s Cafe, where they have a surprisingly decent selection of hiker supplies. Once we were satisfied with our food for the upcoming 100 mile wilderness, we headed over to the ATC office in town to pre-register for our entry into Baxter State Park. While there we decided that we’ll most likely complete our hike on the 13th.

With our chores done, we headed back to Pete’s Cafe for lunch. We both got the better than grilled cheese, which was a slice of homemade bread with 5 types of cheese, tomato, and bacon. Pete’s Cafe is a pretty awesome place.

We spent the rest of the day just relaxing at the Lakeshore… partly in our room, partly out on the patio with some beers. We had dinner, and an appetizer, and two awesome desserts over the course of a few hours. This was the last good meal we’ll get until we come out of the 100 mile wilderness in about 5 days, so we didn’t hold back. I’m going to miss eating like this…
